Description:

As a successful Controller, you will be responsible for directing the financial affairs of the Credit Union to establish and meet key economic and financial objectives. The role encompasses the management of all accounting and finance functions within the Credit Union to ensure that accounting systems and controls are sound, that all operations of the credit union are properly recorded in the general ledger, and that all financial statements and reports are materially correct and compliant with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all month-end closing activities including general ledger maintenance and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Review and approve credit union revenues and expenditures and ensure appropriate accounting treatment
  • Prepare timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial statements and reports for use by management, the Board, and state and federal regulators
  • Prepare, and share, analyses of financial results; developing recommendations (strategic and tactical)
  • Supervise the Credit Union's Accounts Payable (AP) function and serves as the credit union liaison to assigned credit union vendors
  • Oversee the investment accounting function and play a lead role in investment portfolio allocation decisions. Serve as a primary liaison to brokers, overnight funds repositories
  • Prepare and present the monthly allowance for credit losses analysis and provision for loan losses expense recommendation
  • Supervise the fixed assets, expense accrual and prepaid accounting functions including FASB 91 accounting for select organic and participation loan expenses
  • Establish and maintain appropriate written procedures to ensure compliance with internal controls and for business continuity purposes in the event of staff turnover and/or extended absence
  • Oversee the preparation, quality assurance, and submission of the quarterly Call Report ensuring that all supporting documentation is organized and preserved for future auditor/examiner review
  • Serve as Chair of the Asset Liability Management Committee (ALCO) and coordinate the compilation of all monthly ALCO meeting materials, minutes, etc. Assume primary responsibility for monitoring interest rate risk, liquidity risk and concentration risk. Make recommendations as dictated by ongoing monitoring results.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely delivery of quarterly ALM and CECL file uploads to ALMPro, the credit union's outsourced service provider. Review and incorporate the resulting ALMPro documentation into relevant internal processes, reports, and presentations.
  • Coordinate preparation of the credit union's annual budget as well as ongoing budget variance tracking and reporting
  • Oversee the accurate preparation and submission of annual federal and state tax filings. (990, 990t, CA 109 & 199)
  • Ensure the accurate preparation and submission of local property tax filings
  • Supervise other Finance department staff; initially the Accounting Specialist. Additionally, oversee various finance related tasks assigned to team members outside the department.
  • Serve as primary liaison to external audit firm and coordinate audit firm RFP processes when determined to be necessary due to contract expiration or service level concerns
  • Serve as the primary liaison to NCUA/DFPI examiners with regard to financial functions
  • Serve among several Credit Union liaisons to the Supervisory Committee
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to facilitate increased efficiency and cost controls
  • Actively participate in the credit union strategic planning process and associated strategy implementation including project leadership of assigned initiatives
  • Participate in the establishment and maintenance of the Credit Union's Vendor Management program, especially with regard to vendor services associated with Finance department functions
  • Serve as an active participant in the Credit Union's Business Continuity program
  • Participate in other research, special projects, and tasks as directed by the CEO
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of 5 years' financial institution Finance/Accounting management experience covering a substantial percentage of the above-described functions
  • Working knowledge of accrual accounting/GAAP
  • Strong leadership, supervisory and interpersonal skills
  • Strong proficiency in PC applications including MS Word, Adobe, and advanced Excel functionality
  • Good organizational, project management and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
