What You'll Do:
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and testimony, and providing information and assistance to the public; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Deputy Sheriff II is the experienced class in this series, fully competent to perform a wide range of peace officer duties. It is distinguished from Sheriff's Sergeant in that the latter supervises and trains deputies in addition to participating in law enforcement activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
  • Patrols assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property, observe situations and deter crime by providing high visibility.
  • Responds to suspicious activities and answers emergency calls for service.
  • Enforces state and local laws and ordinances; issues verbal warnings and citations; pursues and apprehends suspects and requests assistance as required.
  • Investigates juvenile and designated adult criminal activity and incidents as the assigned detective.
  • Coordinates crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses, overseeing collection and preservation of physical evidence.
  • Restores order, protects life and property, and maintains the peace at public gatherings and in conflict situations.
  • Prepares and documents cases, completes reports and records, and prepares and maintains other logs and records.
  • Transports criminals to the Courts, hospitals and various other locations.
  • Serves civil papers to County residents; researches and locates person to be served.
  • Serves as a team member in such special projects as drug enforcement, livestock investigations and boating regulation enforcement.
  • Investigates traffic accidents and provides traffic and crowd control as necessary; participates in special details and assignments, including K-9 and Search and Rescue.
  • Retrieves, identifies and returns found property and/or evidence to owners.
  • Provides emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons and requests additional response.
  • Provides information, directions, and other services and assistance to the public.
  • Coordinates with and serves as back-up to other local law enforcement agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

NOTE: The level and scope of knowledges and skills listed below are related to the job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics.
Knowledge of:

  • Basic law enforcement terminology and concepts.
  • Techniques for dealing with people of all socio-economic levels under hostile and emergency situations.
  • Safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work.
  • First aid methods and their applications.

Skill in:

  • Reading, interpreting and applying complex laws, procedures and policies.
  • Observing and accurately recalling places, names, descriptive characteristics and facts of incidents.
  • Remaining calm and taking appropriate action in tense situations.
  • Making rapid, sound independent judgments within legal and procedural guidelines.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, records and other written materials.
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must be willing to work evenings, nights, weekends and holiday shifts. Must be able to obtain a basic P.O.S.T. certification within twelve months of appointment as a Deputy Sheriff I and maintain firearms qualification.
Desirable Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is:
Deputy Sheriff II: In addition to the above, eighteen months of sworn law enforcement experience at a level equivalent to the County's class of Deputy Sheriff I.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

RETIREMENT

The County participates in the CalPERS retirement system, with both the County and the employee making contributions toward the employee's retirement.
CalPERS Retirement Program:

  • Tier II: Post 1/1/2013: 2.7% @ 57

HOLIDAYS

Employees earn 12 sick days per year with an unlimited cap on sick day accumulation.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
The County is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness certified employer.

INCENTIVE PAY
County employees may be eligible for additional incentive pay, such as on-call pay, shift differential pay, locked facility pay, or annual uniform allowance, as defined in their specific MOU.

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE PAY
Additional pay for obtaining P.O.S.T above and beyond that required by job class.

SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT PAY
Additional salary increase for specialty assignments (Field Training Officer, Rotational Criminal Investigations Division, and Bomb Squad).
