Chaplain

The Chaplain provides spiritual care and support to hospice patients and their families, addressing their emotional and spiritual needs during end-of-life. Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide spiritual assessments, counseling, and support to patients and families facing end-of-life issues.
  • Offer spiritual guidance and comfort, respecting diverse religious and spiritual beliefs.
  • Conduct or arrange for religious rituals and ceremonies as requested by patients and families.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure holistic patient care.
  • Document patient interactions and spiritual care provided.
  • Participate in community bereavement services, as requested.
  • Participate in community outreach and education programs related to hospice and palliative care.

Environmental conditions and physical requirements include:

  1. Regularly sitting, standing, walking, talking, using hands, listening and observing.
  2. Regularly working at a computer station for 2 - 4 hours at a time.
  3. Occasionally reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and lifting of items weighing 25 pounds or less.
  4. Works with Hospice patients in home, SNF, and RCFE settings. The conditions in homes and facilities vary with each patient.
  5. Provides own transportation to patients' places of residence.

Required education: Master of Divinity (MDiv) or religious studies/theology degree from an accredited seminary, college or university.

Required experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in chaplaincy, pastoral ministry or similar field.

Required skills and abilities include:

  • Knowledge of diverse religious and spiritual traditions, including an understanding of end-of-life rituals and practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening, empathy, and compassion.
  • Ability to establish rapport and build trusting relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Ability to provide spiritual and emotional support to patients with diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong ethical and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to cope with emotional stress and maintain composure in challenging situations.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred qualifications include:

  1. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units.
  2. Prior experience working with individuals and families facing end-of-life issues, grief, and bereavement.
