Associate Director of Financial Aid

The Associate Director of Financial Aid, under the direction of the Associate Dean for Admissions and Financial Aid, serves as an integral part of the Financial Aid professional team committed to excellent customer service in support of our students.As such, the candidate supports the team in its efforts to administer all financial aid programs to law students – through counseling and advising, communication of policies and procedures, and application of appropriate methodology. In this role, you also supervise one staff member.

You will administer the law school's financial aid for graduate students, while exercising sound professional judgment, keeping in mind both institutional policies and federal policies.

Responsibilities:

• Direct the review of financial aid applications, including the monitoring of materials through multiple electronic systems, by creating workflow processes for aid assessment and awarding using federal data and data obtained from the College Scholarship Service.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of the Office of Financial Aid; oversee the day-to-day management of the Department of Education's Direct Lending Program (requires knowledge of Federal rules and regulations).
• Monitor and maintain up to date knowledge of university and federal financial aid policy, communicate, document and process information to ensure all staff are fully trained.
• Determine eligibility for aid for both current students and for post-graduation funding for alumni participating in our LRAP program.
• Coordinate and collaborate with other schools to ensure that student-facing messages (loan notifications, payment deadlines, cost of attendance issues, loan servicer changes, etc.) are consistent while still being school or program-specific.
• Counsel and advise students on eligibility, policies, financial planning and debt management.
• Manage disbursement, drawdown and reconciliation of the Direct Lending funds.
• Prepare federal and institutional reports for a number of different outcomes and reasons, including identifying conflicting data, correcting student records and communicating changes appropriately.
• Review and calculate aid packages across a number of scenarios (incoming 1L on/off campus, returning 2L/3L on/off campus depending on age, transfers, JSDs/JSMs/LLMs, non-matrics, LRAP); use sound judgement to suggest when alternative packages should be considered.
• Communicate complex financial information to students, agencies, and other appropriate individuals or organizations in a timely and professional manner; provide referral to other departments or individuals when necessary and remain available as a resource for future questions.
• Manage financial aid application process and recommends new policies and procedures.
• Review, design and update yearly Financial Aid Handbook.
• Maintain the database as required by the demands of the PeopleSoft system and organization.
• Design/develop and maintain SLS financial aid website.
• Serve as Law School liaison on University-wide Financial Aid Working Group.
• Represent the Law School in Associate Dean's absence in other University settings and at local and national conferences.
• Assist with yield efforts of the Office of Admissions by utilizing financial aid as a recruiting tool for Admissions.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience in the area of Financial Aid, or combination of education and relevant experience.Bachelor's Degree strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated experience in needs analysis and packaging of student financial aid.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to exercise tact and discretion when dealing with students, families and staff.
• Expertise in counseling and working with students individually, ability to provide excellent customer service in difficult situations.
• Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage time and workflow and to manage multiple, concurrent high priority projects in a time-pressured environment.
• Demonstrated understanding and ability to explain University policy to others, detailed knowledge of financial aid regulations.
• Knowledge of multiple financial aid systems, document management systems, and window based environment and office applications.
• Demonstrated analytical and quantitative skills, good judgment.
• Experience in training and providing leadership to other staff.

The expected pay range for this position is $101,144 to $116,961 per annum.
