Description:

Description

Where you'll work: You will be working on nearly 400,0000 acres of Green Diamond's privately held forest property, located in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties along the Northern California coast. Our offices are nestled in the redwood forest near the Pacific Ocean.

What the job is: The Seasonal Wildlife Technician is focused on conducting Northern Spotted and Barred Owl surveys as required by Green Diamond's Habitat Conservation Plan and other pre-harvest raptor surveys required by the California Forest Practice Rules for Timber Harvest Planning and Operations. You will be working 90% of the time in the field. The ideal candidate may have some knowledge in conducting owl or other types of raptor surveys. Experience with sage grouse monitoring is very similar to what we do here at Green Diamond with the remote night work, breeding observations, and ATV use. Safety is our first priority at Green Diamond. You will get at least 4 weeks of job and safety training prior to the start of the season.

Work schedule: This job is mostly night work as you see in the schedule below. The start and end times in your day will fluctuate based on the time of year.

  • February
    • Heavy training for safety issues and job training
    • Average 8- or 9-hour days, 5 days per week
    • 50/50 mix day and night work
  • March
    • 90% night work conducting spotted owl broadcast surveys
    • 10% office prep work and scouting survey locations during the day
    • Average 10-hour days, 5 days per week
  • April through May
    • 80% night work conducting broadcast surveys
    • Work includes data submissions, prepping for the field, scouting survey locations, and conducting daytime spotted owl (NSO) demographic surveys
    • Average 10-hour days, 5 days per week plus frequent weekend work (1 day per weekend at 6-8 hours with emphasis on NSO demographic surveys)
  • June through August
    • Average 10-hour days, 5 days per week
    • Similar work as April through May, with higher percentage spent on night surveys

Who you are: You enjoy being outdoors and have a passion for working in wildlife. It's helpful if you have developed the ability to identify owl species by sound too. You enjoy fieldwork and in your personal life enjoy camping, backpacking, and hiking. You have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, aptitude to learn new skills, and are comfortable navigating to remote forest settings by yourself at night.
